The Hypersonic Base Layer is one of the greatest aerodynamic apparel advances of recent times. Years of our own research and development combined with hours of wind tunnel testing at the Silverstone facility by former world hour record holder Alex Dowsett, have produced a lightweight, WorldTour-proven “secret weapon” optimised for riders operating in the 40–50km/hr window. Results have been ratified by WorldTour teams with data showing that pairing the Hypersonic Base Layer with the Pro-1 Evo Speedsuit can save an average of 10–15 watts, with a maximum saving of 16 watts at 50kph.
Designed to be worn beneath a close fitting jersey or speedsuit the Hypersonic Base Layer works by manipulating airflow around the rider. The textured Superstripe fabric on the sleeves and the raised trip seam on the lower back project through the outer garment to trip the boundary layer of air, creating a controlled low-pressure wake that reduces drag – much like a car spoiler. This configuration cuts drag over a range of speeds and yaw angles but is specifically optimised for riding between 40–50km/hr and it has been shown to comprehensively beat the competition across multiple test scenarios.
Breathable fabrics in the main body help maintain core temperature to minimise overheating related power loss, while low profile gripper bands keep the garment perfectly positioned in an aggressive riding stance. A neat front pocket offers a secure place to store a key or race radio ensuring practicality doesn’t come at the expense of performance.
The Hypersonic Base Layer is available in seven sizes and for best results is intended to be paired with a smooth or lightly textured outer layer such as the Pro-1 Evo Speedsuit.
